Cannabis plants found in Cairns CBD park

Cairns Regional Council workers found a cannabis plant above the stage at Munro Martin Parklands this week. A TROPICAL shrub of a different kind was discovered by council workers at the Far North’s “premier gathering place”. Four cannabis plants were found nestled among flowers above the stage at Munro Martin Parklands during routine maintenance works this week. A Cairns Regional Council spokeswoman confirmed the plants were found in planter boxes. “It is unknown how they came to be there and the plants were handed over to police for disposal,” she said. The $10 million venue hosts a wide range of shows, including orchestras, music concerts and theatre performances. “The Parklands boast tropical plantings, vine covered pergolas and arbours and an open-air plaza to encourage passive, casual use of the facility,” the council’s website says. Division 5 Councillor Richie Bates said Cairns residents had a “fairly eclectic lifestyle”. “I wasn’t aware we had booked reggae-town for Munro Martin park,” he said. “It is not exactly the kind vegetation we wanted for the venue.” Cairns police Sen-Constable Russell Parker said the plants will be destroyed. “No one is going to be charged, because you can’t prove who put the seeds in there or if they were spread by birds or caught in mulch,” he said. Munro Martin Parklands is open to the public from 6am to 8.30pm, seven days a week, except on ticketed event days. The stage will host a Christmas pantomime show next Saturday. UK-based singer songwriter Mike Rosenberg, aka Passenger, will be performing in January next year. http://www.cairnspost.com.au/news/cairns/cannabis-plant-found-in-cairns-cbd-park/news-story/918773c6d7627defd2fcdd26d5029efb
