Victorian government minister visits medicinal cannabis crops in Canada

First commercial cannabis crop handed over by Victorian Agricultural Minister Jaala Pulford. COMMERCIAL cannabis crops overseas are being visited by the Victorian Government to investigate the future of the budding new medical treatment in Australia. Minister of Agriculture Jaala Pulford toured an indoor growing facility in Canada last week, which will support plants to treat up to 200,000 patients. The visit comes after a Melbourne company was approved to grow the first commercial crop in Australia earlier this year and Ms Pulford flagged thousands of Victorians will have access to medicinal cannabis within years. Up to 450 children will get treatment from August, however experts believe hundreds of thousands of patients will be eligible across Australia in the future for a range of illnesses. Ms Pulford said visiting the cannabis super crops was an eye-opener. “Australia’s medicinal cannabis industry is in its earliest days and the knowledge that has been gained in Canada over recent years will help guide us and take us forward,’’ she said. “Just last month, the Victorian Government marked the biggest milestone in the cultivation of the medicinal cannabis industry in Australia, with the awarding of the first commercial permit to Melbourne based the Cann Group. “Victoria’s involvement in the medicinal cannabis industry is in its early phases and we are keen to find out from other more established markets what some of the opportunities and challenges are.” It is understood Ms Pulford is also investigating new types of medicinal cannabis products while on her tour which will include Israel.
