Barry and Joy Lambert Honoured as Pioneers in Medicinal Cannabis Research

Grandparents Recognised for Transformative Contribution to Medical Science

Barry and Joy Lambert have been recognised as pioneers in medicinal cannabis research, receiving Honorary Fellowships from the University of Sydney for their groundbreaking support of cannabinoid therapeutics. Their commitment has propelled Australia to the forefront of global cannabis research, benefiting countless patients.

A Lifelong Mission Inspired by Family

The Lamberts’ advocacy began as a personal journey to help their granddaughter, Katelyn, who was diagnosed with Dravet syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy. Faced with life-threatening seizures, the family turned to medicinal cannabis as a potential treatment. Their experience ignited a passion that led to the largest philanthropic donation in the University of Sydney’s history – a $33.7 million pledge to establish the Lambert Initiative for Cannabinoid Therapeutics.

A Game-Changer for Medicinal Cannabis Research

Since its inception in 2015, the Lambert Initiative has become a world-leading research centre housed at the University’s Brain and Mind Centre. With over 40 researchers dedicated to investigating the therapeutic potential of cannabinoids, the initiative has driven major advancements in the field. Beyond research, it actively educates healthcare professionals and policymakers, ensuring cannabis-based medicines gain wider recognition and accessibility.

Recognised for Outstanding Contributions

At a prestigious ceremony in the University of Sydney’s Great Hall, Vice-Chancellor Dr Michael Spence awarded Barry and Joy Lambert Honorary Fellowships in acknowledgment of their extraordinary impact on medical research. Their citation highlighted how their financial and ideological support had reshaped Australia’s understanding of cannabis-based therapeutics, creating a legacy that will endure for generations.

A Lasting Impact on Healthcare and Industry

The Lamberts’ influence extends beyond academia. Barry Lambert now serves as Chairman of Ecofibre, a company pioneering the production and distribution of hemp-derived products in the United States. His work continues to bridge the gap between research and commercial applications, making cannabinoid therapies more accessible to those in need.

Changing Lives Around the World

Thanks to the Lamberts, patients suffering from epilepsy, chronic pain, and other debilitating conditions have newfound hope. Their work has not only transformed lives in Australia but has also set a global precedent for cannabis research and policy reform. Their enduring legacy is one of compassion, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to improving medical science.
